Keynote on Computational Intelligence

This morning I was asked to give a keynote speech ini a conference. The original keynote speaker was not able to make it and the conference was started this morning. I have spare time in this afternoon, so I said that I am able to do it in this afternoon. The main idea of my speech is to encourage everybody to do research in the future area. Computational intelligence methodologies and tools are needed to explore the future. One of the application is in the social network area. Many people - especially younger generation - live in two worlds; real world and cyber world. Just like in the real world, there are (social) problems in the cyber world. I gave an example of our twitter research, in which we are trying to understand the structure of Indonesian twitters. Before that, I told them how little we understood about such problems by showing Barricelli's universe. Barricelli did an experiment - simulation using the first computer, when von Neumann and his group were not using th...

Teaching how to give presentation in English

yesterday, I was asked to tutor a bunch of students on how to give presentation in English. Mind you, English is not our first languange. Heck, it is probably our third or fourth languange. So, it was a challenging situation - an undestatement. On top of that, my tutorial was part of a 3-day tutorial. I didn't know what was given before my sesion. The session started with a contunuation of previous session, which was making a presentation. (Again, I didn't know what they were taught before.) So, I went along. Then, it was the presentation session. I divided the class into 5 to 6 person groups. There were 6 groups. And I told them that each of the member has to talk in front. How they divide was up to them. Presentation was set at 18-minutes/group. I asked the group to come forward one by one and I took notes of their presentations. At the end we discussed their presentations. The result was okay. All of them made their presentations in time! It was amazing. I was afraid they wo...

Presentation Preparation

I've got (too many) presentation invitations. So, I do quite a bit presentations. Maybe, it is even my main job :) One thing people don't realize is that the amount of effort and time that I have to put preparing for the presentation. Some people think that I can use old presentations and can just wing it. Apparently, each presentation is different. I still need to modify the presentation. Some times the presentation only requires minor adjustment, other time (most of the time) I have to create a new presentation. Whether it is minor or major modification, it still takes time. The very least, I usually spend 1 hour preparing for the presentation. Tomorrow I am giving a presentation. It's a 30-minute presentation plus questions and answers. So, it's one hour. Give and take. I already spent more than two hours preparing it. Oh well ...

Free Photos for Presentations?

I do quite a bit presentations. To make things more interesting, usually I put interesting image or photos in my slides. (I know not to over do with the images and such.) The question is where can I get good and free photos for my presentations? I see those presentations at slideshare.net and envy those great images. Aaa...
