news from the trenches: acknowledgement, award, and more work to do

It's time to post some news...

The 15 September 2004 edition of Swa Magazine listed me as one of maestro in specific field. In my case, they put me under IT security expert. Wow! I didn't know this until somebody told me to buy the magazine. (Here's the page scanned from the magazine.)

I was also awarded IGOS award. IGOS is "Indonesia Goes Open Source," a movement lead by Research and Technology Ministry in Indonesia. I didn't go to the celebration since I was sick at that time. I am not sure whay I was awarded though. I thought my contribution to the open source community is still minimal.

New schoolyear has been started. It's time to teach classes. I am teaching two classes; Introduction to Programming (with Object Oriented) and System Security (grad course). Meanwhile, I've got new students working on their theses.

On the University R&D side, my term as the Director of IT Research has ended. I am glad. I was not too happy with the position since I thought I was given a "body" but not "hands and feet" to move around. I had some ideas but could not execute them. Now, I have to think about IT research direction and perhaps build a real IT research center. But I need resources to do so. I am not sure if I could get it from my university. Perhaps in other university? Or even private (industrial) research center? (As a side note, I was invited to apply for a Dean of Computer Scince position in a large university. I was honored, but I had to decline since I still have many things to do.)

On the business side, security business is picking up. My company (INDOCISC) has been busy doing some consulting projects. So busy so that we even had to turn down new clients! I guess, you have to be focus and master the field to be considered a real player. Some people even asked us if we want to do some regional works (Malaysia, Singapore, Brunai, Hongkong, etc.). To be frankly, we are not ready. We have the skill. It's just we have limited human resources. (I wrote a piece a while ago about growing up. Our company has to grow, but we are worried that we loose control, culture, and the fun associated with the company. We'll see how it goes.)

Boss,

Selamat jumpa lagi nih... ama 'pelacur' modern...
Why 'pelacur' modern ? coz I have the skills, I have the willingness to fix the wrong things right, but I just didn't... How pathetic I am... :-(

Boss, becareful of every reward that you have; sometimes they are all will make you fly to the air or even fly to the moon (like Sinatra's song). God, I love the song... Sorry for the intermezzo...
Always down to earth, just like what you are until now...

And about teaching the Into to OO, don't give the kids hard time, give them space and time to think what they want to do with the lecture... by doing that, most probably they will develope better than we can Imagine..

The problem is, I tend to do (and give lecture) in a non-OO style. Thus, they might not understand OO completely. I guess they'll have to learn it as they go along.

Himbauan Kepada Hacker & Cracker Indonesia & Malaysia

More bad news with Malaysia - Indonesia

I've got more emails and news about bad news between Indonesia and Malaysia. To be exact, there was a news about RELA (not sure what that is) that goes out after Indonesians in Malaysia. There were incidents where they hit Indonesians, rob, and do horrible things. I cannot even write this is my blog. I am so sad and frustrated. What's going on with Malaysia (and Malaysians)? What did we - Indonesian(s) - do to deserve this? I thought there should be less boundary between Indonesia and Malaysia. But ... What's going on there, bro & sis? You know, more Indonesians now feel that they are offended by Malaysians. I can tell you that this bad feeling is increasing. This is a bad publicity towards Malaysia. People are now creating various calling names, such as "Malingsia" (it's a short of "maling" [thief] "siah" [you, Sundanese]), and worse.

Say NO to APJII!

Prolog At the end of 1997, I went back to Indonesia from my studies and work in Canada. The .ID domain management in Indonesia at that time was in a confusing state. Nobody wanted to manage it. Universitas Indonesia (UI) - the original maintainer - was in a fight with APJII (the Association of Indonesian ISP). In the end, IANA gave me a mandate to manage the .ID domain. Since then, I manage the .ID domain with open management. There are problems, but mostly minors. Until recently, when APJII (again) is trying to take over the .ID domain management from my team. Here's a short info to give you a head start. Short summary APJII (the association of ISP in Indonesia) is trying to takeover the .ID domain management in Indonesia. They have tried and will try everything to take over. Long description I've been managing the .ID domain since the end of 1997. At that time, nobody wanted to run the domain management. First of all, a brief description of how we run things. To run the .ID d
