Mark Zuckerberg is in Indonesia

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook (as if you need this introduction - ha ha ha), is Indonesia. He met with our next president, Joko Widodo - famously called Jokowi, in Jakarta. Joko Widodo will be sworn as our president on Oct 20th.

One of the photos that made me laugh (happy laugh) is this. In this picture, Jokowi showed Mark some kind of pants (I think it's a pair of jeans) from a small store in Tanah Abang. Jokowi was known for cleaning the mess in Tanah Abang. He loves to go to small places and meets with ordinary people. We call this "blusukan" (pronounce like: blue shoeq un - ha ha ha) in Javanese.

Oh, btw, we make jeans in Indonesia. Those famous brands are made in Indonesia.

Mark went to Yogyakarta before he went to Jakarta. Yogyakarta - or Jogja in short - is famous for Borobudur temple. Another photos that made me laugh is this. A group of tourists, not knowing who Mark Zuckerberg is, asked him to take a picture of them and he took the picture. Mark is just a nice guy. Here's the photo.

Mark Zuckerberg is in Jakarta as part of internet.org.

Anyway, he should have come to Bandung. I'll give him a tour of Bandung (and Tangkuban Perahu crater). We can also talk about many things, like internet governance here in Indonesia. Having ran the .ID domain for a long time and being involved with many internet initiatives I can share my view on those issues. I can also tell him that Facebook is declining in Indonesia and that he should plan to do something about it. (FB has changed Indonesian social behavior.) He doesn't have to believe me, but speaking from experience I am not BSing. Next time? (Or is it going to be too late - facebook bites the dust like friendster.)

Anyway, have fun while you're in Indonesia, Mark. Enjoy the trip. Stay healthy.

Thanks for this picture of MZ in Yogya. We would have made a special trip tp have experienced this "typical Indonesian event for a bule

Us non-Indonesians are often approached by Orang Daerah for making pictures or (more likely) to be the central focus point within a picture. I often call out "Lima Ribu untuk Foto"to them which gets a bunch of laughs...Of course in Jakarta around Menteng or Pondok Indah I charge more!

Himbauan Kepada Hacker & Cracker Indonesia & Malaysia

Say NO to APJII!

Prolog At the end of 1997, I went back to Indonesia from my studies and work in Canada. The .ID domain management in Indonesia at that time was in a confusing state. Nobody wanted to manage it. Universitas Indonesia (UI) - the original maintainer - was in a fight with APJII (the Association of Indonesian ISP). In the end, IANA gave me a mandate to manage the .ID domain. Since then, I manage the .ID domain with open management. There are problems, but mostly minors. Until recently, when APJII (again) is trying to take over the .ID domain management from my team. Here's a short info to give you a head start. Short summary APJII (the association of ISP in Indonesia) is trying to takeover the .ID domain management in Indonesia. They have tried and will try everything to take over. Long description I've been managing the .ID domain since the end of 1997. At that time, nobody wanted to run the domain management. First of all, a brief description of how we run things. To run the .ID d...

More bad news with Malaysia - Indonesia

I've got more emails and news about bad news between Indonesia and Malaysia. To be exact, there was a news about RELA (not sure what that is) that goes out after Indonesians in Malaysia. There were incidents where they hit Indonesians, rob, and do horrible things. I cannot even write this is my blog. I am so sad and frustrated. What's going on with Malaysia (and Malaysians)? What did we - Indonesian(s) - do to deserve this? I thought there should be less boundary between Indonesia and Malaysia. But ... What's going on there, bro & sis? You know, more Indonesians now feel that they are offended by Malaysians. I can tell you that this bad feeling is increasing. This is a bad publicity towards Malaysia. People are now creating various calling names, such as "Malingsia" (it's a short of "maling" [thief] "siah" [you, Sundanese]), and worse.
