Tech Gadgets ARE social devices

Looking at various sites / blogs / forums, I read complaints that smartphones and all those tech gadgets are anti-social. Hmm ... This is ALL WRONG.

If you look closely, at the other end - and also using smartphones - are people. Not wall or dead objects. Human. They are socializing through smartphones. It's just that most people see they are talking to the device. No! They are communicating with another person (or persons) on the other side. The device is just, well, a device.

Now, have a look at those people who are travelling and reading books. Alone. By themselves. They are not talking to other people. So, who are the anti social?

True but only if you are alone so you need to communicate with family or friends via mobile device. What we see today is people hangout, meeting with friends even in cafe but they are busy with their own gadget. Why bother hangout with friends if you are focus on your gadget?

It even worse when a kid go with his/her parent and their parent is busy with their own gadget. This is wrong and we need to fix it. Use the gadget wisely :)

With a book you are never alone. You are communicating with the writer while being silent silent. It is like you remember your interaction with loved ones who are deceased.

Himbauan Kepada Hacker & Cracker Indonesia & Malaysia

Tweet: quantity or quality?

I have a hypothesis: if you tweet a lot, you get more followers.

Granted there has to be some kind of guidelines on what you tweet to attract followers. You would tweet something that you would think it's useful, at least to you. You wouldn't tweet something that you don't even want to read. Having that, I think quantity will attract more followers.

I have tested this in my blog. I have a blog that is considered popular, meaning it is in top 10 of Indonesian blogs. (Not this blog, but my other blog. The one you are currently reading is in top 100, though.) When I write more articles, I got a lot of visitors. I know this from the statistic page of wordpress. When I write less article, less visitors.

I thought if I write good articles, but less in number, I would attract more or the same number of visitors. It turned out, not. I got more visitors when I write lots of (so-so) articles. Thus, more attracts more.

Maybe, it is not the quantity, but the update is the important fa…

How I work, study, and listen to music

I always tell my students to find the most suitable ways to study. Sometimes, they way we study (or work) may look strange to "normal" people. So be it. Don't worry about it.

I remembered a story about a poet who always use paper with different colors when he typed his poem on his typewritter. (I guess this is a pre-computer/Internet era, eh?) He did that to make him more productive. There is no direct relation between the color of papers and productivity. You'll be crazy to research about this.

So, now here's what I do. I like fonts a lot. So when I type something on my computer, sometimes I use different fonts. At the end of the day, I converted the fonts back to the "standard" ones so that whatever I write - reports, papers, or just notes - can be shared and worked on by other people. That is why the use of "paragraph styling / formating" in word processor is important to me, because with one change I could change the whole document. Many peo…
